  • How much does it cost?
    • The SPLIT app allows the forces of demand and supply in the marketplace to determine the price.
    • The driver will determine the price based on the cost of travelling between two points. In their calculations they will take into account the petrol used and any toll fees that may be applicable.
    • They driver will then apportion the cost to each passenger. i.e. if there’s only two of you he will divide the cost by two.
    • As the passenger you will be provided with all the drivers who are on that route, leaving at that time, and the amount they are charging. The passenger can accept the price that they think is best.
  • As a driver, how do I determine how much I should charge?

    General Guidance (Updated March 2024):

    • If you’re driving in an urban area with relative congestion (traffic!) you can look to charge approximately R5.00 per km.
    • If you’re driving on an open road with little to no congestion, the total price per km is approximately R3 per km. You should make adjustments if and when the petrol price moves.
    • The driver should then divide the total cost by the number of passengers.
    • This guidance is based on the petrol consumption of a VW Polo, and the driver will need to make adjustments based on their vehicle type.
  • When does the driver get paid?
    The passenger pays the driver on the SPLIT app, as soon as the driver arrives to pick them up. The payment is processed by SPLIT through SPLIT's payment processing partner Paystack. The payment will reflect in the drivers bank account within 24 - 48 hours. 
  • If the driver asks you to pay outside of SPLIT

    SPLIT will never ask for your login or payment details outside of the SPLIT platform. If you paid for a ride outside of SPLIT (e.g. EFT payment) or organised a ride outside of SPLIT and the ride doesn’t appear in Upcoming Rides, you may have paid for a fraudulent ride or a ride that cannot be tracked by SPLIT for your safety purposes.

    To ensure you don’t pay upfront for a ride that doesn’t show up and to ensure an independent third-party verification of the ride having taken place with an identifiable person, always book your rides through the SPLIT platform.

  • What if you can’t find a match?

    SPLIT is a new, proudly South African, ride share service. If you can’t find a match it’s possible that there aren’t enough people who know about the app in your area as yet. SPLIT will provide discounts on future rides from time to time if you share the app with your friends. Share the app with your friends and help more people save.

  • How does SPLIT ensure safety?

    Safety is of utmost importance. SPLIT verifies the identity of ALL passengers and drivers as well as the validity of driver’s licences, licence disks and criminal records. SPLIT reserves the right to prohibit access to the use of the app as part of our safety policy. When you SPLIT a trip through the app, the app tracks your journey as a safety measure. Processing of payments through the app also enhances passengers and drivers safety.

  • What are the benefits of being a driver?
    • You save on travel costs. If you only pick up one other person, you can save 50% on your travel costs.
    • You know best how much you spend on a particular route, therefore you can determine what price to charge.
    • You receive 80% of the amount that you’ve charged, SPLIT shares in the other 20%.
    • You can schedule a trip in advance and decide how many passengers you want to offer a ride to. 
    • You will be matched with someone that fits your travel schedule, no stress, no fuss, no complicated co-ordinations.
    • By sharing a ride, you contribute to reducing traffic congestion and carbon emissions. You are an active contributor to cleaner air and a greener planet.
  • What are the benefits of being a passenger?
    • You save on travel costs. If the driver only picks you up, you can save up to 40% on your travel expenses.
    • You save time, by using your time more productively whilst the driver chauffeurs you to your destination!
    • You save on your own car’s maintenance and mileage.
    • You effectively use a transport network that picks you up at home and drops you off at your destination, as if you were using your own car. No walking or driving to public transport points.
    • By sharing a ride, you contribute to reducing traffic congestion and carbon emissions. You are an active contributor to cleaner air and a greener planet.
  • Finding a driver or a passenger: What to do if you are new to SPLIT?
    • Complete a profile

    Register as a driver or a passenger or both. Completing your profile allows other members to get to know you more when they are reviewing your ride request. Be sure to submit the necessary ID verification documents. All members prefer to ride with an identity verified member. If you are a driver make sure your vehicle is road worthy and submit the necessary documents to support this.

    • Search for a ride

    To find a ride enter the pickup and drop off address. Include the date and time preferred for your pickup. The drivers that are available on your route will be displayed under the “show available rides” section.

    Select the ride that best suits you.

    • Offer to drive

    You can offer to drive one day and choose to be a passenger the next day. SPLIT values preserving your flexibility and convenience. As a driver you set the price of the trip. A verified vehicle and a fair price request is preferred by SPLIT passengers.

    • Pay on the SPLIT platform

    The passenger will wait for the driver to arrive to pick them up. Once the driver has arrived, the passenger will click the pay button on the app. The ride will then commence.
